Communications, Psychology, and Spanish

(1)

How can language, the culture of communication, and a psychological lens of family come together to deepen our understanding of the family unit and how it impacts each individual of that unit?

My name is Margo McKenna and I am a soon to be graduate of the University of San Diego. I am graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications, with minors in both Psychology and Spanish. I am passionate about bridging communication between people of different demographics, as well as behavioral analysis, specifically in child development. I am passionate about understanding the world around me, and thrive in both collaborative and individual settings. I consider myself extraverted, making me a leader in academic circles and part of a broad social circle. My strengths include public speaking and interpersonal communication.

My Three Foundational Competencies

Cross-Cultural Communication

During my time at USD, I have been drawn to communication across cultures and between them. Being a Spanish minor, I have been able to explore a multitude of cultural texts and histories, as well as apply them to the modern world and our community. In my Spanish classes I have been able to directly work in the city of Linda Vista, for example visiting Montgomery Middle School and working in their agricultural garden that pays tribute to the Kumeyaay land we inhabit. I have also been able to explore cross-cultural communication in my Psychology classes, one being having the amazing opportunity to take Cross-Cultural Psychology abroad in Tokyo, Japan, just this last intersession. Being in Japan and being able to study cross-cultural psychology and compare Japanese culture with American culture was fascinating and deepened my understanding of the world around me. Being able to not only learn about cross-cultural communication in these ways but also to directly interact with them has been integral to my college education. This is one of my pillars because it is a fascination of mine and a large concentration of my studies is cross-cultural communication.

Family Studies

In my studies I have emphasized family dynamic studies to prepare myself for a future career in family psychology and child development analysis. By taking both Psychology courses such as Child Behavioral Disorders and Black Families, I have studied different family dynamics and the importance of family-focused research in the psychological lens. I am also currently taking a course in Family Communications, which emphasizes the impact of family on the individual. In this class we have studied different family dynamics and parenting styles, as well as how our family plays a pivotal role in who we are. In the future, I hope to get my Masters in Child Clinical Psychology, and use this in the family therapy context. By understanding a child’s family, it is possible to understand the child’s needs and developmental progress through behavioral analysis and therapy. This is one of my pillars because it reflects my interest in the study of families and my future career that I am extremely passionate about.

Bilingual Proficiency

Being a Spanish minor has given me the ability to have multilingual proficiency that has allowed me to connect with people in ways I would not have otherwise been able to. Using this in my travels and in my interactions socially and professionally in San Diego, I have been able to connect with Spanish speakers and utilize the language in my work at school and beyond. While this skill is conducive to connecting with others in a social context, I also believe it will be an incredible asset to my future career in Southern California. I hope to use the proficiency in the Spanish language in a professional setting and also in order to connect better and more naturally with my future patients, bridging this gap I see frequently. This is one of my pillars because my Spanish minor is what I am most proud of throughout my time at this university, and something I am very grateful to be able to have completed.

About/Bio Page

IMG_5784.jpeg

Throughout my life I have always been passionate about human communication and the ways we connect with one another across different cultures, languages, and geographical locations. This curiosity created my  interest in communications and psychology, with a love for the Spanish language in my adult life. Over my college years I was able to narrow down my studies to family studies, with an emphasis on child developmental psychology and cross-cultural studies. My studies have allowed me to understand the human brain better, and our need to connect with one another to survive. Belonging to a group is essential for human brain development, whether that be familial or social. I am an outgoing, curious, and driven student, excited about my future as a Clinical Child Psychologist  and/or Family Therapist through behavioral analysis. I have been able to develop a business level proficiency in the Spanish language throughout my academic career, which I am thankful will help me greatly in the Southern California workspace. I want to know as much as I possibly can about different cultures and demographic backgrounds in order to further understand the human brain and within-group development. My experiences, such as traveling to Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan, to do cross-cultural psychology research have prepared me to dive into new places and experiences from this lens. I believe that human connection is the deepest and most precious thing to be experienced on this earth, and I think communication and psychology are the unifying influences upon human connection. I often find myself a therapist to many and a friend to all. I am interested in how all of these things come together to impact the family unit as well as each individual of the unit, including adoption or gender, for example. I am curious, passionate, extraverted, and have a lot to say, so thank you for listening!

Big Question:

How can language, the culture of communication, and a psychological lens of family come together to deepen our understanding of the family unit and how it impacts each individual of that unit?

This is my big question because it is the basis of my studies and interest in the family unit. The different parenting styles, communication styles, cultural backgrounds, and psychological aspects of the family unit have a direct impact on each individual. I want to know how the different levels to this question can aid in understanding child development. While my different areas of study have helped me understand each component from a different lens, they are all cohesive in this question. I plan to use my major and minors cohesively in my future career as well, as I explore this cohesiveness and use my skills after graduation.
